Junior Golf Programs or Private Coaching: What’s Right for Your Child?
Junior Golf Programs vs. Private Lessons: Which Is Right for Your Child?
One of the questions we hear regularly from parents is:
Should my junior golfer join a program, or would they be better off taking private lessons?
The answer depends on the player.
Age matters, but so do experience, current skill level, goals, personality and how seriously they want to pursue the game.
At Elevate Performance Golf, we offer both because group programs and private coaching serve different purposes in a junior golfer’s development.
Understanding the difference can help you choose the best place to start.
What Are Junior Golf Programs Best For?
Junior golf programs give players a structured environment where they can learn, practice, compete and develop alongside other junior golfers.
For younger and developing players especially, the social side of golf matters.
Learning alongside other kids creates opportunities for games, challenges, competition and teamwork that simply aren’t possible in a one-on-one lesson.
It also allows us to develop more than just golf technique.
Depending on the player’s stage, sessions can include putting, short game, full swing, athletic development, practice skills, games and competition.
Most importantly, we want juniors to enjoy coming to golf.
That’s why the Elevate Junior Golf Pathway includes different programs for different ages and stages rather than putting every junior golfer into the same environment.
Our Winter Junior Golf Programs
For our indoor winter season, the pathway includes five programs:
SPARK | Ages 4–6
An introduction to golf built around movement, games, exploration and fun.
IGNITE | Ages 7–10
Building golf skills, athleticism, confidence and an understanding of how to practice and play.
IGNITE GIRLS | Ages 7–10
The IGNITE development environment in a girls-only program.
LAUNCH | Ages 11–14
A more structured development environment for juniors ready to continue building their skills and becoming more independent golfers.
LAUNCH GIRLS | Ages 11–14
The LAUNCH experience in a girls-only environment.
Our indoor groups are intentionally small, with a maximum of six players, allowing our coaches to maintain plenty of interaction with each golfer while still providing the benefits of training with peers.

When Do Private Golf Lessons Make More Sense?
Private coaching allows us to get much more individualized.
Instead of designing a session for a group of players, everything can be built around one golfer and what they need most.
Private lessons can be particularly valuable when a junior:
- Has a specific technical issue they need help with
- Wants more individualized feedback
- Is beginning to compete more seriously
- Has clear performance goals
- Needs an assessment of their current skills
- Wants help creating a structured practice or development plan
- Is progressing beyond what group coaching alone can provide
A private session also gives us more time to understand the player.
We can look at their full swing, putting and short game, but we can also discuss scoring, tournament performance, practice habits, other sports, goals and where they ultimately want golf to take them.
From there, we can identify priorities and begin creating a more personalized development plan.

Does My Junior Need to Choose One or the Other?
Not necessarily.
In fact, for many junior golfers, the combination can be better than either option on its own.
A group program can provide consistent practice, games, competition, social interaction and exposure to different golf skills.
Private coaching can then provide the individualized assessment and technical work that’s difficult to accomplish entirely within a group.
As players become more committed to competitive golf, that combination can become increasingly valuable.
That’s part of the thinking behind the Elevate Junior Golf Pathway.
We don’t believe every junior golfer needs the same amount of coaching, the same program or the same development plan.
Some players may begin in SPARK and simply fall in love with golf.
Others may enter IGNITE or LAUNCH while also taking occasional private lessons.
Competitive juniors may eventually progress toward more individualized coaching, our Development or Performance environments, physical training, tournament preparation and more structured long-term planning.
The goal isn’t to put every player into the same program. It’s to help each player find the right next step.
What If We’re Not Sure Where Our Junior Fits?
That’s completely normal.
Age gives us a starting point, but it doesn’t tell us everything we need to know about a junior golfer.
Experience, skill level, maturity, goals and previous coaching can all affect where a player fits best.
If you’re unsure whether your junior should begin with one of our programs or private coaching, send us a message.
Tell us a little about your junior golfer—their age, golf experience and what they’re hoping to accomplish—and we’ll help point you in the right direction.
